It is up to the landlord. Potential tenant is free to refuse this request and landlord is free to not renting his/her property to them. Is the applicant, without the wifes credit history, looking like he/she will skip trace without paying the rent ? If no, why refuse a good tenant. But make sure both their names are on the lease contract, so if one decides to play cute, you can go after both of them. I have heard husband and wife pairs playing this little game, where they rent with ones credit history and drag the home owner years with countless court hearings and what not, while the other ones history gets a little better . Then lather, rinse, repeat, cycle continues. Dont let that happen to you.
